This narrow intarsia scarf is a great opportunity to use up all your precious lace-weight mohair and alpaca leftovers.

It is knitted using a variation of the intarsia technique, which is similar to marling, where you are holding yarns together, partly. This technique is well suited for intarsia beginners, as fewer balls of yarn are required compared with regular intarsia.

The design consists of 3 chart blocks with graphic shapes, which you can mix and match by filling each shape with your scraps in a playful way.

Finished measurements of the sample:
1: Width: 7.5 cm / 3 inches.
2: Length: 160 –177 cm / 64–70.75 inches (12 chart blocks).

Yarn: One strand of fingering-weight base yarn held together with one contrasting lace-weight strand of mohair or alpaca blend yarn. Choose a base yarn that is not too smooth but with a slightly raw surface, so that both yarns blend together well. A single-ply yarn can be a good base yarn as well.

For 12 blocks, you will need approx. a total of:
MC: 262 yds / 240 m.
CC: 242 yds / 221 m.

You can fill the blocks from only one contrast colour up to multiple colours. As the graphic shapes of the 3 blocks only require a small amount of a yarn (1.5–6m / 1.6–6.6 yds), you can use up the tiniest bits of lace-weight scraps.

Note: The scarf can easily be lengthened or shortened by changing the amount of chart block repeats worked. Keep in mind that you will need to adjust yardage accordingly.

Yarn used in the sample:
MC: Isager Tweed (70% wool and 30% mohair, 219 yds / 200 m – 50 g), 2 skeins of colourway sand.
CC: A mix of all sorts of mohair and silk blends or brushed alpaca yarns, varying from 200m / 219 yds to 300m / 328 yds per 25g.

Needles: 2.5 mm / US 1.5 straight or circular needles.

Gauge: 26 sts x 21 garter ridges (42 rows) to 10cm / 4“ on 2.5 mm / US 1.5
needles in garter stitch, measured after soaking and blocking.

Construction: This scarf is knitted following one of the 3 chart blocks while combining your MC yarn with colourful lace-weight scraps. You can mix and match the chart blocks according to your preference. Each chart block can be coloured differently, ending up creat‑ing at least four different patterns from each block.

Note: The pattern is written in English only.
